These purpose-built routes are complemented by numerous natural trails throughout the surrounding woodland areas, establishing Balfour Forest as an ideal destination for mountain biking enthusiasts looking to spend a full day exploring on two wheels. Additionally, the Aboyne Bike Park and Tarland Trails are located within the greater surrounding area.

Trail Overview

The Birse Community Trust (BCT) manages the forest, while the Aberdeenshire Trail Association, in collaboration with BCT, supervises the sanctioned trails and community work. The trails are well-established, maintained by local riders, and are widely ridden year-round

Chutney Trail (Grade: Blue)

Chutney is the standout trail at Balfour Forest and is often described as “blue flow heaven.” The trail features smooth corners, natural rhythm sections, and a layout that allows riders to build speed without feeling intimidating. Split into sections, Chutney is perfect for sessioning or linking into longer forest loops.

Relish Trail (Grade: Blue)

Relish branches off from Chutney and delivers a shorter but more intense burst of riding, with tight berms and playful trail features. It’s ideal for riders looking to improve cornering skills or add variety to a Chutney lap.

Other Riding in Balfour Forest

Beyond the main sanctioned trails, the forest contains a network of natural singletrack, link-ups, and unofficial lines. These range from mellow woodland trails to more technical options suited to experienced riders.
