surly gears are better for a mountian bike. you can always leave it in the same gear and have the option of changing if needed. and suspension forks with a lockout are just the same as rigid forks, but again have the option of flicking a switch and having the benefit of suspension. its all about choices, the way i see it gears and a lockout fork would give you all the benefits of the setup you are running (just lock the fork and dont change gear), but with the option to change the bike easily to suit the terrain better.

of the places you have mentioned i have been to castle coch and cwmcarn. i have heard of the garth before, ive seen a few pictures of some jumps there too. its near to castle coch isnt it? ive been trying to get accurate directions to get there from someone for ages. im from dinas powys near barry, i mostly ride in the woods by me, or i ride into cardiff and then up the taff to castle coch. but i am desperate for some new spots. can you please reccomend any good ones? i dont have a car so i rely on train services to get to farther away places.

Last night was up in Coed y Coesau, ridgeway, castell coch, Caerphilly mountain. Also ride the Garth, Tyn y Coed, Sirhowy, Machen Mountain and Cwmcarn locally plus all the other spots slightly further away. How about you?

This is primarily my winter and night ride bike and is intended to minimise need for cleaning and maintenance. Aswell as this singlespeed I also have 3 other mountain bikes, all with gears and some level of suspension. So I have my choices. Riding a dedicated singlespeed is very different from riding a geared bike and keeping it in one gear though as it's lighter and more direct and there's less energy lost in teh transmission. As for suspension, well I sometimes miss it on this bike but only very occasionally.
