Danny MacAskill discovers Livigno with bike trial legend Hans Rey
9 November 2012 | By AngusMcIntoshSupported by mild temperatures, the Alpinbike resort Livigno seduces with fantastic trail riding till late October. A fact, also known to mountain bike trial legends Hans "No Way" Rey and "Mister YouTube" Danny MacAskill, who took the chance and met up with video filmer Mark Huskisson to shoot some impressive footage in "little Tibet".
After a long and challenging bike and media season with trade show visits, trial shows, interviews and tons of other stuff on his schedule, Scottish trials rider Danny MacAskill was more than happy to follow Hans Rey's invitation to ride around what Hans refers to as his second home: Livigno.
In the Italian alpine resort, Danny MacAskill who is probably the best known trials rider worldwide at the moment and Hans "No Way" Rey, one of the original bike trials inventors enjoyed the great diversity of landscape and riding in the Livigno region. Mark Huskisson captured all of the action the two friends experienced. One of the highlights for sure being the steep downhill on loose soil, located right in between the Italian and the Swiss border on which Danny comments: "This simply is the most epic descent, I've ever seen. This downhill is proper freeride stuff, for sure!" See Mark's videoclip to get yourself an idea, of how "steep" this section really was.
Danny seems to be the proper partner, Hans has been waiting for to attempt the line from top of the mountain: "I had this line in my mind for the last five years and Danny's visit to Livigno seemed to be the best occasion, to finally give it a try", says Hans. For Danny, this was a great opportunity as well, as he could finally show his freeride skills to the world. "I grew up watching all this freeride DVDs and it was great to ride some of that stuff by myself."
Moreover, Mark's video footage of Danny's and Hans' week long trip around Livigno shows the rough beauty of the Italian alps as well as the silence and wilderness of this place. "This place has so much to offer. You can go to the top of these huge mountains by lift easily or put in some amazing Cross-Country rides. Also, there is some great training up here with the high altitude", says Danny. Both agreed in saying that the long way down through the woods on endless single-tracks or on wide, open terrain is worth every climb. Especially when considering the breath taking and diverse landscape, ranging from alpine rock gardens to fairytale-like woods. Matt Huskisson put together some soulful footage on two wheels, starring two of mountain biking's greatest.
