SXC Cross Country Series 2011
The Dalescycles.com SXC Cross Country Series is about to kick off with a bang this weekend at the ever popular Kirroughtree course in Dumfriesshire. After a successful 2010 series the new season again promises to be an exciting year with a mix of some old favourites and some new courses making their debut. Dalescycles.com are once again on board as series sponsor and will be providing race support, free mechanic, latest test bikes and prize draws as well as a 15% discount to SXC racers. Add into the mix the fun and relaxed atmosphere that SXC’s are famed for and the series promises fantastic racing for all abilities. The series kicks off with the fast and furious Kirroughtree course. With guaranteed sunshine some great flowy single track and cheeky new natural sections it's looking like a great start to the year. Round 2 and it goes technical and tough with the popular Aberfolyle course, bring your Granny ring for this one! Round 3 and a new member to the SXC family at the well rated Comrie Croft course, used successfully for a number of years for the popular "Hairy Coo" it promises to be a belter. Round 4 and its Cathkin Braes, the venue for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Get the practice in now all you aspiring champions! A completely new course from when it was last used in 2009 and not a grassy slog in sight! The last round of the series back again fresh from its "best newcomer" status from 2010 Perth has got it all from fast, fun and flowing singletrack to brutal rooty climbs, a great test of an all round Mountain biker. In a change from previous years the Scottish Champs will this year be a stand alone event at the end of the season at the ever popular Drumlanrig Castle and promises to be a fantastic way to end the season on the course that probably sums up the SXC the best, technical, fun, fast and flowy. 20th March - Kirroughtree 24th April - Aberfoyle 29th May – Comrie Croft 19th June – Cathkin Braes 7th August – Perth 4th September – Drumlanrig (Scottish Champs) With some of the most technically challenges course in Britain the series has grown to be a proving ground for young talent who then go on to compete against the best on the world stage. 2011 will see Kenta Gallagher, Grant Ferguson and Katy Winton (all members of British Cycling's Olympic Coaching programs) all aim for selection to compete for Great Britain in World Cups and World Championships throughout the year as well as competing in the SXC's as and when it fits in with their schedules. Gallagher who is now living the life as a full time cyclist with the British Cycling Academy will ride his first Elite race this year at the first round of the series and it is looking to be an excellent battle between youth and experience as Elite Scottish Champion Dave Henderson and Returning 2008 British Series Champion Gareth Montgomerie will do everything in their power to prevent a Début win for the youngster. In the Women’s Elite category Scottish Champion Lee Craigie will want to put last years injury worries behind her and start the series with a bang but will be pushed all the way by the ever improving Lesley Ingram, Elke Schmit and Natalie Milne, Add in to this last years sport winner Hannah Barnes stepping up a category and it could be an exciting race. Other riders to look out for in the age group races will be Veteran all rounder Gary McCrae fresh from a dominant Cyclocross season as well as young talent Lucy Grant who won every mountain bike race she entered in 2010 and will want to repeat the feat again this year as she steps up a category to youth.
