Forestry Commission Scotland Blazes new Trails
Rangers from Forestry Commission Scotland have been putting the finishing touches to a new series of trails in Corlarach Forest, south of Dunoon. The improvements are part of the Commission’s national Active Woods campaign, which aims to promote the health benefits of getting out and exercising in forests and woodlands. Islands Enterprise and the Commission have been working on the project for six months, resulting in a network of upgraded and improved paths and trails ready to be explored. Walkers, cyclists and horse riders will now have new ways to explore the forest and two new car parks have also been added to the forest at Kilbride and Ardyne, each with information points offering visitors details about the trails. Andrew Malcolm, Forestry Commission Scotland’s ranger for Cowal & Trossachs, said: “Argyll Forest Park was the first of its kind to be established in Britain, and many people believe that it’s also the best. “Corlarach Forest is a particularly beautiful location, and we’re pleased that visitors will have more ways than ever before to appreciate the woodland. “The trails offer ways for everyone to enjoy being outdoors, from those looking to enjoy a quiet stroll through the forest to cyclists looking for an exciting new challenge. “The Glenbranter Mountain Bike route is also sure to be popular, offering a purpose-built 1km downhill trail for bikers. “I’m sure that visitors to the new trails will be as captivated as we at Forestry Commission Scotland are by the forest, and I hope to see people coming back time and again to enjoy the forests of Cowal.” A series of waymarked trails offer paths for those travelling by foot, bicycle or on horseback and choices of long and short walks, ranging in length from one hour to seven hours, mean that all levels of fitness are catered for. Those feeling particularly fit can tackle the Corlarach Loop - 17 miles of strenuous but beautiful terrain, which includes a new bridge built as part of the trail improvement programme. Additional work by the Commission outside Corlarach Forest has resulted in Argyll Forest Park’s first purpose-built downhill mountain bike trail at Glenbranter, a 1km red-graded course suitable only for experienced bikers.
