ChainReactionCycles Team Report From The The World Championships
Chris Kovarik (Aus) and Claire Buchar/Kovarik (Canada) from Team Chain Reaction Cycles were in form and representing at the UCI World Championships just outside Australia's capital city of Canberra. Julien Camellini had trained really hard for the World Championships but the nerve injury in his hand just hasn't healed quickly enough even though he was picked to ride for the French National team.. The track for the Worlds this year was getting a lot of criticism from the riders as it wasn't the typical DH track we are used to racing on at the World Cup races - it was a lot flatter. The track was 2.3km long with only a 210m drop in elevation so it was very anaerobic as the riders had to pedal more than usual... trying to power out of every corner and the last 45 seconds of the track was totally flat. Some riders chose completely different bikes than they usually ride with less suspension and even single crown forks in some cases. The course designers had made the most of the small hill by building a course that had some pretty tricky steep and rocky sections at the top and then build some nice jumps on the flatter sections to keep the speed going as much as possible. Chris and Claire both opted to ride their Intense 951 bikes which was a great choice for the track and they both did really well. Claire ended up 6th and Chris 9th in the world, so 2 riders in the top 10 was great for the team. The fans in Australia were amazing getting behind all the riders - especially the Australian ones - the noise from the crowd was deafening as the riders came through the 'triple treat' section of 3 big jumps on the mid section of the course. It made for a fantastic atmosphere and a very exciting race. On behalf of everyone on the team we would like to congratulate Steve Peat on winning the Rainbow Stripes at last, something that has eluded him for the last 16 years. Steve beat his team mate Greg Minnaar by 0.05 seconds and Mick Hannah had a great ride to take the bronze medal.
