Riders Tackle Tough Crychan Enduro Challenge

Foresters and organisers of the Crychan Enduro took on the worst weather the summer could throw at them to ensure Crychan Forest was up to the demands of 149 riders from as far afield as the Republic of Ireland and the Isle of Man who were competing in the two-day event recently. Officials from the Welsh Trail Riders Association, liaising with Forestry Commission Wales Local Area Manager Brian Hanwell, prepared the 35-mile course through the forest and delivered one of the toughest challenges faced by the riders this year. This was the fourth time Crychan Forest has hosted the event but this year conditions were appalling, as incessant rain fell on the first day onto a course already saturated by torrential downpours from the previous week. As a result, organisers had to cut out sections of the route on the second day and, out of the original line-up, 87 riders dropped out, leaving only 62 to reach the finishing line. Brian Hanwell said, “This was a great event and we were very happy to work with the organisers to ensure the success of this event, despite the conditions. "As well as taking on all that the weather had to offer, careful planning was necessary to avoid sensitive areas of conservation and archaeological interest. "Crychan is a premier location for events such as this, and Forestry Commission Wales supports the sport at several forest venues throughout the country when it is well managed.” The winners were Tom Sagar (Premier), Philip McLaughlin (Expert), Murray Thomson (Veterans) and David Lloyd Jones (Clubman). WTRA Clerk of the Course Brian Fallows said, “We are happy to have run another successful and challenging event in Crychan Forest, made possible by the close co-operation of Forestry Commission Wales. "This event is one of four that we organise annually in the Llandovery area, two trail bike rallies suitable for novices, a clubman enduro and a British championship enduro. Our sport is being put at risk by illegal riding and we would encourage off-road motorcyclists to enter an organised event where all provisions are in place to ensure a thoroughly enjoyable, safe and legal day's riding." www.forestry.gov.uk
