MTB Popularity Skyrockets in the region of Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis

In the autumn of 2013 the holiday region Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis opened the doors of a brand-new bike park. Already known as a family-friendly destination for skiing in the winter, the tourism region decided families should be the cornerstone of their bike program as well. A lot has happened since then and before the region kicks off the sixth full season on June 7, 2019, one thing is very clear: mountain biking in the three Tyrolean villages has become more popular than ever.

At first, mountain bikers were able to hit six trails within the bike park and the legendary Frommestrail. The three villages nestled within the Tyrolean mountains Serfaus, Fiss and Ladis have since further developed the trail variety and especially focused on the expansion of singletrails outside of the bike park in the past two years.

True to the nature of being a family focused destination, a number of trails have been built and shaped to meet the needs of all levels of bike riders. Blue trails such as the Scheidtrail, Zirbentrail, Almtrail and Högtrail as well as a red trail called the Flüstertrail, have joined the Frommestrail in the line-up. “Thanks to the work we have put into developing singletrails and the bike park we can offer exciting trails and plenty of variety for the whole family,” states the bike park manager, Christian Zangerl.

The hard work by the tourism region, trail builders and bike enthusiasts in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis has not gone unnoticed by the biking community and guests from all over the world. The expansion of the trail network last year was mainly responsible for an increase of lift bike transport of around 115% in comparison to the year before. Compared with the first full season in 2014, last year showed an increase of 750%. The bike park was also able to welcome a new record number of visitors.

The region now has 27 kilometers /16.7 miles worth of singletrails, that meander through spellbinding woods and past breathtaking panoramas and allow mountain bikers to overcome a total of 2,700 m / 8,838 ft. of altitude into the valley below. Visitors that prefer to skip the lifts and challenge themselves can experience the full trail and tour network giving them over 207 kilometers / 128 miles of mountain biking pleasure, which covers 8,000 m / 26,246 ft. in altitude both up and down hill.

However Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is not stopping there. “Thanks to our new green trail, the new Alpkopftrail, we now truly have trails for absolutely every skill set and riding level. We will reveal more about the new trail soon. It is our goal to be able to offer sporty families a path into mountain biking and simultaneously please avid mountain bikers too. Some bikers may have a young family and want to show their kids the sport they are so passionate about, without having the young rippers drop into the gnarliest of trails on their first try. It is all about having fun together outdoors, on two wheels,” Zangerl explains while looking forward to the upcoming season.

Mountain biking has become a central part of Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis’ identity since 2013 and will continue to do so. New trail ideas are being developed as we speak and time will tell how the trail network will develop in future. For now though all eyes are set on the bike park opening on June 7. Even though we still have to be patient, you can mark the day in your calendar and start dreaming of an endless summer on the bike.
