Review: Renthal Lock On Grips

When Renthal one of the most highly regarded motocross brands decided to dip their toes into the ocean of mountain biking a few years ago we all got pretty excited! Renthal used their expertise from the motocross industry to develop a selection of some of the best products on the planet that are used by the likes of Team Monster Energy Specialized and MS Mondraker on the world cup Downhill circuit amongst others so you know its good!

Renthal developed they’re fantastic push on grips a while back and made somewhat of a breakthrough. They understood that it wasn’t the pattern of the grips that made them comfortable it was the compound of rubber that the grips were made of so offered their grip in 4 different compounds to suit every riders needs.

The super thin and bare minimal design felt absolutely amazing in use and personally I don't think anybody even got close to the renthals comfort wise, but like nearly all push on grips they still suffered with the dreaded twisting “throttle grip” which unfortunately plagued them. Renthal knew what was required with a lock on grip but they weren’t going to attempt that until they knew they could recreate that same comfort and performance that we had come to know and love with their Push-on variety...

Renthal came up with the innovation to integrate the grips lock on collars into the grips central core which eliminates any movement between the aluminium collar and the grip itself that could begin to develop over time and ensures they are going to stay put in all weather conditions.

The grips are available in Medium, Soft, Super comfort and Kevlar compounds with each having its own corresponding colour and characteristics to please every rider.

We’ve had these on our test bikes for over a month now in all the available compounds and they have been awesome… Both with or without gloves they offer incredible comfort and performance across all the available compounds Renthal have on offer.

One complaint? If you want the soft compound you have to put up with bright pearly white grips. The one colour per compound makes perfect sense in terms of manufacture and recognising which grips to repurchase but if you’re a purist who thinks grips should be black… These aren’t going to be the ones for you.

Unbeatable comfort and performance from Renthal... Don't expect to see anything but these on MoreDirt Test bikes for a long while!
