First Look: Kinetic - inRide Watt Meter System
Before we know it winter will be here and the torrential rain will become yet more frequent until it becomes nearly impossible to get outside and ride. If your still looking for your fix on the bike an indoor trainer is just about as close as you can get. Check out the Kinetic inRide Watt Meter.
Kinetic, a leader in precision cycle trainers, presents the Kinetic inRide Watt Meter: the world’s first Bluetooth SmartTM trainer-based power meter. The system uses the new Bluetooth SmartTM communication protocol found in iPhone 4s and iPad 3 to pair a heart rate monitor and a power sensor pod with the new Kinetic inRide iPhone App* to measure wattage with any Kinetic fluid trainer.
“Our customers have been asking us for more features for a while,” says Paul Carlsen, Division Manager, Kinetic. “Data uploading, programmable wattage and heart rate zones as well as full wireless capability are some of the key features they’re demanding. We are delivering all of this and it won’t break the bank.”
Kinetic’s incredibly accurate fluid trainer power curve allows precise wattage readings at exact speeds. Proprietary firmware in the inRide Sensor Pod measures speed and cadence at the tire and translates that into wattage with a simple equation. That data and the heart rate data is collected and displayed on the paired iPhone 4s or iPad 3. Post-workout file sharing allows the rider to upload training data to their favorite web site or email files to a remote coach.
Kinetic inRide App features include: time-in-zone for both heart rate and watts, programmable rider data for training zones and calorie burn, TSS, nPower, iFactor and Mean Maximal Power** in 5 increments. Ride history is stored for future reference and easy upload to online-training websites and workout sharing sites. Auto coast- down calibration keeps accuracy precise, no matter what combination of tire and tire pressure a rider uses. Bluetooth SmartTM communication ties the components together and eliminates additional phone dongles and cross talk with other devices, making this the perfect solution for solo or group trainer workouts.
“The new watt meter is already generating a lot of excitement with dealers and distribution partners” adds Carlsen. “We’re excited to help riders capitalize on all the benefits of a wattage- based training program; using some of the best tools and in-demand features they expect from a watt meter.”
The inRide system is available from Fall 2012 on, at € 199.- and is compatible with Kinetic fluid trainers including: the Road Machine, Rock And Roll and Pro Trainer.
*Available for iPhone 4s and iPad 3 only (not an iPad-specific app) **TSS, nPower, iFactor, and mean maximal power are in-demand power meter measurements as defined by Hunter Allen and Andrew Coggan’s in their book: Training and Racing with a Power Meter (2nd Edition).
