Quentin Derbier Wins Cannondale Dual Climb at Crankworx 2012.
The Cannondale Dual Climb was the first event of the inaugural Crankworx Les 2 Alpes. First place and 1500€ went to Frenchman and Grenoble local Quentin Derbier.
“This was an original race format that made you switch between the 26” and 29” bike,” says Derbier. “You had to be really powerful and explosive. I changed the gear on that last steep rise but mainly stayed on the same one for the whole race. Now, it is time to have some beers.”
The competition required two runs from each athlete; a run on a 26” bike and a run on a 29” bike for each ladder. Derbier combined his recent accomplishments in four cross with his lengthy background in downhill to finish with the fastest time. Second place and 1000€ was awarded to Australian downhill rider Mick Hannah, and third place and 750€ was awarded to enduro specialist and Alsace local, Jerome Clementz. The results show the Cannondale Dual Climb truly tested the riding genres of each of the competitors.
The 2800m long course required racers to negotiate 700m of vertical drop on the 26” and 29” mountain bikes. Cannondale provided rigs for the riders and the 29” bike showed its merits with a faster ascent, while the 26” proved to be more maneuverable on the descent for many athletes.
The head-to-head action was a great show for the crowd gathered on the slopes of Les 2 Alpes, and the course challenged every rider’s endurance and finesse in negotiating the best lines up and down the course. The Cannondale Dual Climb was conceived and designed by French freerider and Ayton Concept consultant Pierre-Edouard Ferry, and Marco Fontana of the Cannondale Factory Racing Team.
Next up on the Les 2 Alpes’ schedule of events is the Giant Air DH, supported by Fox on Wednesday, July 11 at 12:30-2:30pm. Current standings after today’s qualifications runs have Gee Atherton, one of Britain’s most prominent downhill racers, ranked first; followed by New Zealand’s Sam Blenkinsop and France’s Aurelien Giordanengo. Tomorrow’s finals will consist of top ranked female Rachel Atherton in a field of seven girls while the men’s line-up will have 94 riders racing for the top spot.
