Red Bull Pump Riders in the Czech Republic
This time, forget about intensive pedalling because the chains are off! A unique event where you have to make the most of your own body energy is on its way to the Czech Republic! Red Bull Pump Riders are also set for a European premiere on 23 June!
"Everything you can think of has already been done before," says the event ambassador and Czech bike legend Michal Marosi. His experience of last year's Brazilian race of the same format made him think about the possibility of transporting the whole event to the Czech Republic in order to host the sport for the first time anywhere in Europe. "It's a new off-shoot with great future potential," says Marosi.
Michal Maroši will be in charge of designing the track, which, as he himself readily concedes, can be set up in a back yard. After an initial start ramp, racers are confronted with a sequence of banked turns, bumps and jumps, where they need to "pump" and incorporate all sorts of techniques to surmount the 150 m obstacle course as quickly as possible. One heat usually lasts for 20 seconds. There are two racing categories: MTB and BMX.
The June event, the exact location of which will soon be announced, is open to anyone who registers. Riders from neighbouring European countries are also expected to attend. In both categories, 32 entrants will progress from the heats and form head-to-head pairs in knockout-style rounds. Each round has two legs, and if the duel ends in a draw the rider with the faster aggregate time goes through. The winner will win an attractive prize and be named Europe's inaugural top "pumper". "I've got it covered. I think it's going to be a landmark event delivering further impetus and a boom for the sport," Michal "Marosana" Maroši adds in conclusion. Teaser for Redbull Pumpriders:
