Gethin Bike Park - South Wales
Cognation, mtb trails South Wales is pleased to announce that Bike Park Wales have been selected as the preferred operator to develop, build and manage a new mountain bike park in South Wales.
The new bike park will be built in Gethin Woods, Merthyr Tydfil and is another major investment into mountain biking within the region as part of Cognation, mtb trails South Wales.
The project is a partnership project and is part-funded by the EU's Convergence European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government with match funding coming from the Welsh Government and partner organisations.
The new bike park at Gethin Woods will have a visitor centre, on-site facilities, downhill trails, singletrack and cross country trails and will offer an uplift service. The park will open towards the end of 2013 and is already attracting the attention of the mountain biking community.
Mountain biking is fundamental to the tourism industry in South Wales and Cognation, mtb trails South Wales is improving the current facilities and building new trails at Afan Forest Park, Cwmcarn and the new bike park at Gethin Woods.
Cllr Ali Thomas, Leader of Neath Port Talbot CBC says ‘This is an exiting opportunity for the mountain bike industry in South Wales that Neath Port Talbot benefits from. We are proud to be part of the Cognation Project.
Cllr Jeff Edwards, Leader of Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council says "We are delighted that the County Borough will benefit from a redevelopment of Gethin Woodland Park, which is seen as another major Tourism investment for the area.
This new development will be a huge boost for Tourism and the wider economy of Merthyr Tydfil, which we hope will encourage both local people and visitors from further afield to enjoy the great outdoors within Merthyr Tydfil County Borough.
Sally Tansey, Forest District Manager of Coed y Cymoedd Forest District says 'We are pleased to be able to provide the opportunity for a public-private partnership in the Welsh Government woodlands managed by FCW. This is an excellent example of how woodland can help with job creation and regeneration of an area'.
Bike Park Wales added, "We are delighted to hear that we have been chosen as the preferred operator for the development at Gethin. We, as a team, have had the vision for a bike park in South Wales for 10 years now and that has just become a reality. Our vision is for a truly world class gravity bike park. Being part of the wider Cognation programme is important for us as we create a key part of the wider development of mountain biking in South Wales.
