Biking Champ joins 7Stanes Team
Ex-Scottish cross country champion Julie Cartner from Dumfriesshire has joined the 7stanes mountain bike project team. Julie has taken up the job of Lead Co-ordinator for the Euro funded project based in Dumfries, which is continuing to build up seven mountain bike centres across the Borders and Dumfries and Galloway. Her role includes a number of key areas of work: business liaison; marketing and promotion; event organisation; developing outreach work to bring more groups into biking; and visitor monitoring. Since 2004, Julie has been entering fun biking events and her racing career started in 2005. In her first year she was winner of the 2005 Scottish Cross Country series and gained a top 30 placing in the mountain bike world cup at Fort William. Being keen to get to grips with all kinds of mountain biking, Julie has now entered her first downhill race this September. Having been brought up in Dumfriesshire, attending Castle Douglas High School, she says it is great to have a job that matches her interests and which is doing great things for her local area. "Through this job I want to help put the south of Scotland on the map as the best place in the world to go mountain biking, and to bring a mountain biker's perspective to the management of the 7stanes." "I hope to bring some big mountain bike events to the area next year which will bring more visitors and business spin offs. One of my main objectives is to let local people know they are living in the heart of Scotland's biking heaven. I am also keen to get more people out on bikes and show businesses how they can capitalise on the growing market of mountain bike tourism," she said. This year, the 7stanes project helped Scotland receive "Global Superstar" status from the International Mountain Bike Association which also rated the country as the top destination in the world outside North America. The 7stanes project is being managed by Forestry Commission Scotland with partners Scottish Enterprise Dumfries & Galloway, Dumfries & Galloway Council, Scottish Natural Heritage, Scottish Enterprise Borders, Scottish Borders Council, Solway Heritage, Scottish Power and Visit Scotland. The Scottish Association for Mental Health has also been supporting the project. The project receives half of its funding from Europe.
