Calling all gnarly Dudes
To celebrate the beginning of National Bike Week, Forestry Commission Scotland is hosting Gnarly Dude, a day of bike-related events and free family fun in Kilmichael Forest on Saturday 17th June.
Cyclists of all ages and abilities are being encouraged to join a trip around the forest's renowned Fire Tower Mountain Biking Trail, in association with Mid Argyll Cycle Club.
The Trail loops through the forest, passing through 19 kilometres of beautiful countryside, with breathtaking views of Jura and Scarba. Lucky cyclists might even get to catch a glimpse of some of the local animals, including red deer, roe deer and eagles.
Once the bike ride is over, weary travellers will be able to revive themselves with barbecued vegetables and local venison, plus live music from up-and-coming local band Coppadog, all in the picturesque surroundings of the forest as dusk approaches.
The Gnarly Dude event is also part of Forestry Commission Scotland's Active Woods campaign, which aims to make people aware of the ways in which they can make use of the woodlands to benefit from a healthier and more active lifestyle.
Colin Hossack, District Forester for West Argyll Forest District, said: "National Bike Week is a great opportunity for biking enthusiasts, born-again cyclists and complete novices alike to benefit from getting out on two wheels. With bikes available for hire, even those currently without a bike can get in on the fun.
"Forests are the perfect place to enjoy cycling away from the noise, pollution and potential danger of the open road, and offer a range of varied terrain that will suit every level of biking ability.
"I hope to see a lot of people out on the day and, more importantly, I hope to continue to see them making the most of the forest in future."
The Fire Tower Trail ride will start at 2pm on Saturday, with the barbeque and bands scheduled to begin at 6pm. Bikers will meet at Achnabreac Car Park, north of Lochgilphead, and are encouraged to come appropriately dressed for the weather.
