Using the excellent forest roads of Bayfield County and the Chequamegon National Forest, we will take a grand loop of Lake Namekagon for the first running of the Hungry Bear 100.
Why the Hungry Bear? Well, the race will be at the time of year when the bears are waking up, so keep an eye out in the forest for a hangry (that’s hungry+angry) ursine creature.
Born from the mind of River’s Eatery’s Mick Endersbe, he envisioned putting together the loop that leaves from Cable, WI, and circles right back around to the pizza joint. We chatted, and devised a route that takes you through an a full 100 mile course, that has absolutely no support, no stop lights, and excellent scenery.
As all Advocate Cycling Productions events are, 100% of the entry fee will be donated to further cycling. For the first year of the Hungry Bear, the entry fees will go back to Mick, who will start a NICA League for the students in the Cable-Hayward-Drummond area. NICA has helped thousands of students get into cycling, including Mick’s daughters, and he wants to help give that same experience to students in Sawyer and Bayfield Counties.
There will be a 60 mile event and 100 mile event. The 100 miler will start and finish in Cable, and the 60 miler will start later on the course, and finish with the 100 miler in Cable.
We believe in the idea of self-supported racing, and as with all of our events, you are responsible for you. We will be checking the course before, during and after the event, but the course will remain open, and you will need to watch for other road users. The course will be navigated by cue sheet, so all riders should have some method of distance measuring on their bike. There will be no course announcements or previews, every rider will receive their cue sheets no more than 24 hours before race start.
