Enduro mountain bike racing, day and night, at the new Falkirk Funduro

6 November 2015  |

The Falkirk Funduro is a brand new family friendly mountain bike Enduro event being staged on the 17km network of trails at Callendar Estate, Falkirk, Central Scotland, on Saturday 21 November 2015.

Muckmedden Events, organisers of the latest event to be added to the hugely popular Scottish mountain bike Enduro calendar, know how to put the Fun into Enduro. They are incorporating the recently upgraded fast flowing red graded trails and a brand new bike skills park courtesy of Bespoke Community Development Company in partnership with Collective Trax, into the multi-stage course on the Estate's mix of flowing and technically achievable trails.

With the addition of an all-natural Enduro trail plus a brand new red trail, both opening specifically for this event, this unique day and night Enduro race offers exciting riding for young and novice riders with plenty of options for the more seasoned weekend warriors and racing snakes who like a challenge.

The optional night ride aspect of the event is fairly uncommon in mountain bike Enduro racing; though some riders taking part may be used to testing their mettle in 24hr endurance races. The Falkirk Funduro offers a rare and welcome opportunity for riders to familiarise themselves with the trails in daylight before strapping on the lights and thrilling their senses by riding the course again after dark.

The Funduro also makes for a great spectator event as the course is accessible enough that family and friends can be on hand to cheer on the riders as they hurtle round the course to certain joy; before rounding off the day at the "Silent Disco" in the main tent.

The event includes a Mini Funduro for riders aged 6/11 and for riders aged 12+, there is the option of Day Only or Day & Night race entry. All races cater for male and female riders, with a capacity for 350 riders in the main event.

As is now tradition for Muckmedden Events, an all women Muckmaiden Ride Out will be held the week prior to the main event on Saturday 14 November at 4pm on the Callendar Estate trail network. All riders should meet at Greenrig Cycles, Greenrig Car Park.

With a strong family focus at all Muckmedden events there will also be plenty of activities for the whole family. Trail Tots will have balance bike races and coaching for teeny riders and parents can chaperone younger riders around the trails if they are new to racing or just a little nervous.

Greenrig Cycles, a new bike shop based at the Greenrig Car Park on the estate, will be open for spares and repairs in addition to a host of other traders and bike shops offering demo rides, services and discounted gear.

The new Canada Wood Kitchen is also on site and is fully licensed for the event, meaning spectators can cosy in and enjoy tray bakes and fresh coffee, or maybe something a little stronger, whilst muddy riders race past the windows. Local Mexican food specialists Habaneros will also be on hand cooking up fresh Burritos to be enjoyed by riders and spectators as they warm their cockles by the campfire.

Aaron Gray of Muckmedden Events, said: "Lots of our entrants bring their families to our events as they know there will always be kid's races and other activities to keep them amused."

"Our entrants always comment on the super-friendly atmosphere and 'just right' choice of trails and Falkirk Funduro will be no different. The trails on Callendar Estate are just perfect for night racing as they are not too long or too technical. A full lap of the Funduro course should take between 45 minutes and 2 hr, so it's a great introduction to night racing and a more laid-back alternative to the 24 hour torture-fests!"

Previous entrant Ally Mackay, commented: "Muckmedden events are ideal for somebody starting out because the races aren't insanely technical, but technical enough for seasoned racers to enjoy them. Also, the atmosphere is FUN rather than purely about serious competition".
